 Project Engagements

Project Engagements

Projects are limited-scope engagements, which help you resolve a financial challenge, either in your personal life or in your private practice.

A Project is often a good fit if you have a particular pain point you'd like to address - and you feel like you need a bit more analytical support than a coaching engagement would offer.

See below for the most common projects. And if you don't see a project that addresses what's facing you, don't worry! We can define a custom project for you.

The first step in the Project engagement process is to complete a Quick Start Coaching Intensive with me, which I describe on the Start Here page.

+ Student Loan Analysis

Overview

Student loans are the reality for most therapists. Holding over $100,000 in student loan debt, isn't the exception, it's the norm. The good news is that there are solid options available to you. You won't be saddled with this debt forever. (Even if you think you earn too little to ever pay off your loans.)

The Student Loan Analysis project helps you evaluate the different options available to you. These include private refinancing, income driven repayment plan options, public service loan forgiveness as well as other longer-term forgiveness options. The student loan landscape is incredibly complex, and unfortunately there is a lot of bad (and conflicted) advice being offered.

I have completed extensive continuing education offered through the CSLP Board of Standards, and have taken a fiduciary oath to ensure that any recommendation I come up with is in your best interest, and not in the best interests of anyone else (including the lenders or me!).

Process

This package begins, as all engagements do, with a complimentary 30 minute consultation meeting. If you're specifically interested in the student loan project, the focus of that meeting will be determining if we are likely able to find you a better solution for debt repayment or forgiveness than you've currently implemented.

If we mutually agree the project would be of benefit, I will fully evaluate your student loans and your options. I will help guide you through the process of implementing the identified solution, whether that's a private refinance or enrollment in an Income Driven Repayment plan.

Project Fee

The cost of this service is $1,000 if your gross annual income is $100,000 or more. The cost is $500 if your gross annual income is $50,0000 or less. There is a sliding scale fee for incomes between $50,000 and $100,000 (e.g. $70,000 income equals a $700 fee).

This service is also included as part of our ongoing financial life planning services.

+ Private Practice Financial Model

Overview

Because your private practice represents your future earning potential, it is often one of your largest financial assets. And keeping track of your earnings can be an overwhelming job. Many practices have clients at many different session rates, and clients don't always show up on a consistent schedule. This can make predicting revenue and expenses a tricky endeavor!

Process

This project begins by reviewing your current case load and session rates. We also fully review your business expenses. Don't worry if you don't have your historical books in perfect order. I love making sense of financial records in all shapes and forms. 🤓

From there, I'll build out a five year financial model which will illustrate the trajectory your business. This includes understanding your current revenue, expenses, tax liability and profitability.

Outcomes

The real power of this project is by giving us a roadmap of the most financially empowering financial changes you could consider for you practice. What would changing your session fee mean for you financially? Are there areas where your practice could be more efficient or save money? What would happen if you took more time off to explore other interests (or simply rest and recharge)? Is there a way to reduce the hours you work without reducing the financial abundance your practice provides you? What would the tax-savings value of an S-Corp? Are there expenses in your personal life that more appropriately belong to the practice (and therefore yield tax savings)?

Building financial models is one of my favorite things to do. I'm not kidding. I love doing this work, and I love the clarity and excitement about the future it can deliver for you. If you want to see me dork out and walk through the details of this modeling exercise, take a look at this video.

Project Fee

This fee for this projects is $1,500 for solo practices and $2,000 for group practices.

If you're in the first two years of solo practice ownership, the fee is $1,000. (I love getting therapists off to a solid start as they launch their practice, so I try to make this project a bit more affordable.)

There is also a sliding scale option for practices with less than $100,000 in annual revenue. Contact me for details.

This service is also included as part of our ongoing financial life planning services.

+ Personal Cashflow Coaching

Overview

Having healthy cash flow practices in your personal life is the foundation of long-term financial stability and abundance. By working to align spending with your personal values and life goals, you will reduce anxiety and step more fully into the life you feel called to live.

Personal cash flow work isn't about judging or shaming your spending habits. Rather, it is about seeing clearly how you spend your money, designing a plan to align spending with your values and goals and then discussing how to make those changes feasible and enduring.

Process

The personal cash flow project helps you take control of your personal finances by brining clarity to your spending. We will look back at the last three months of spending to establish your current spending habits. From there we will develop a targeted spending and savings plan that feels right for you. We will then meet monthly for three months to review your monthly spending patterns. For each meeting, I will compile a monthly report of your spending for review.

Project Fee

The cost of this service is $1,000 if your gross annual income is over $100,000. The cost is $500 if your gross annual income is under $50,0000. There is a sliding scale fee for incomes between $50,000 and $100,000 (e.g. $70,000 income equals a $700 fee).

This service is also included as part of our ongoing financial life planning services.

+ Savings & Investing Quick Start

Overview

If you want to make sure that your level of savings and investing set you up for long-term success, the Savings & Investing Quick Start project is for you!

Process

This project examines both your current and future levels of spending, savings and earnings (from your practice and other sources). It forecasts the next 15 years, estimating the cash flows required for future changes such as home purchases, financing children's educations, professional sabbaticals, or anything else you might have planned. This project also looks at your current savings and investments (including any amounts you've saved through retirement plans) and projects how those savings could grow over time.

Of course we can't predict the next 15 years with accuracy. But the act of thinking through the next 15 years will help you truly understand if your current earnings, savings and spending align to form a financial plan with a solid foundation.

Scope of Project

This project does not examine or offer specific investments (such as mutual funds or ETFs) or overall investment allocation. That work is covered in the Investment Allocation Check Up project (see below).

This project also doesn't perform a deep analysis of your current spending patterns. Rather it simply takes your current total spending as a given. If you'd like help evaluating spending patterns, see the Personal Cash Flow Coaching project above.

+ Investment Allocation Check Up

Overview

This project is for clients comfortable with their overall savings plan (or are completing the Savings & Investing Quick Start project), but want advice on what specific investments to make. This service evaluates your current investments and, if appropriate, offers investment allocation changes to consider implementing on your own.

Investment Philosophy

What our investment recommendations won't contain are specific companies in which to invest or any "hot" stock tips. I believe in buying and holding diversified, low-cost investments for medium and long-term goals. As such, my investment recommendations will be a mix of diversified equity and bond mutual funds or ETFs. There's a good chance I'll recommend a mix of Vanguard funds - I think they're a great solution for almost all investors.

If you require the money you're planning to invest in the next 3 to 5 years, I'd strongly encourage you to consider investing in cash or near-cash investments (like money market funds). If anyone tells you they have an investment that's guaranteed to yield positive returns in a short time frame (or any time frame for that matter), they are either lying or delusional. #sorrynotsorry #realtalk

Project Fee

The fee for this service is $2,000.

+ Life Planning

Overview

Life Planning is the process I use at the beginning of ongoing financial life planning. It is a process for defining what a fulfilled and meaningful life looks like for you. It also helps set you on your way of creating that life for yourself, and navigating any obstacles that might stand in your way.

Process

The Life Planning process takes place over three meetings. The first meeting, Exploration, is offered free of charge for those interested in either this project or ongoing financial life planning services. The second two meetings, as well as supporting exercises and worksheets, are offered through this Life Planning Project. The full Life Planning process is also included as part of ongoing financial life planning services.

Learn more about the process and its benefits on our Life Planning Overview page.

Project Fee

The cost of this Life Planning project is $600 for a single individual and $900 for couples.

This service is also included as part of our ongoing financial life planning services.

+ Bookkeeping Process Evaluation

Overview

Do you find yourself struggling to keep up with your financial bookkeeping? Do you find yourself (blissfully?) unaware of your practice financials until tax time rolls around? If so, the Bookkeeping Process Evaluation project is for you.

Process

This project reviews your current process for bookkeeping to see what's working well and what could use some improvement. I don't offer bookkeeping services, but through this project we will help you evaluate whether it's feasible for you to perform bookkeeping on your own. Together, we'll also explore the benefits of outsourcing your bookkeeping. Even after hiring an outside bookkeeping service, many therapists find themselves struggling to keep up or avoid bookkeeping-related activities. This project will gently look at your current process and devise a process that feels a better fit for you.

Ongoing Support

This project also includes three months of monthly check-in's to see how the revised process is going, and whether any further adjustments would be helpful. We'll also review the financial reports created each month and answer any questions you have about interpreting them. This monthly review will also help you establish the habit of consistently engaging with your practice P&L which is a great way to reduce financial anxiety and overwhelm!

Project Fee

The cost of this service is $1,000.

This service is also included as part of our ongoing financial life planning services.
